The history of coins is the history of easy trade/commerce, but also coins reflect history as they were generally seen as a mean of spreading political or/and religious messages among users.
In our modern thinking a coin must be a disc of metal, with circulatory power and some value, either face value or intrinsic value, or both.
Before the invention of circular shaped coins, people used various objects to which they assigned a certain value in correlation with their utility in everyday life: most common were metallic objects, as metal was also very useful for making tools or/and weapons. That's why even animals (such as cattle) were used as a form of 'currency', because everyone in that region and of course both the buyer and the seller knew the value of cattle, and compared it with the value of other objects needed for living. Of course it was not easy to establish a standard value for all these objects/animals used for trade, not to mention that 'hoarding' such objects or animals could prove at least difficult, so it wasn't the perfect trading instrument that human mind could find.
The coin is a more or less rounded disc of metal with special markings to identify the issuer. A disc is harder to wear by everyday use, by comparison with a square or other geometric shapes, so it was the logical shape for coins, and they 'evolved' to that shape. First coins were made in Asia Minor, and they were rather spherical in shape. It is quite obvious that first coins were made of precious metals, such as the natural silver-gold alloy called 'electrum', and later gold and silver, generally in combination with copper to make them harder. So the coins in precious metals had an intrinsic value that was obvious for the user, proportional to their weight and title of alloy. Later "common" metals such as copper and lead, or alloys (such as bronze and brass) were used for making lower value coins. As the range of metals known to man extended in modern times, coins were struck in other metals such as nickel, iron, aluminium etc. in various alloys that met specific demands of resistance and low toxicity.
Greeks and Romans made their coins into small pieces of art, and they are more valued today than in the times they were circulating currency.
The Chinese people invented banknotes, and this new instrument was easier to handle and use, but it was more fragile and needed to be replaced often if it was intensely used. So the logical evolution would be into making banknotes with high face value, so they changed hands only from time to time and not as often as coins. Even today banknotes generally tend to have the higher values, and coins the lower ones.
The importance of designs, figures and legends struck on the coins was immense, because these marks immediately identified the issuer of the coin, so the user of the coin would not waste any more time in deciding if the coin was good or bad either for keeping or giving away. Hoarding the coins was now much easier, and in numismatics there is a law, the Gresham's Law, regarding the circulation and hoarding of coins. Gresham's law says that any circulating currency consisting of both "good" and "bad" money (both forms required to be accepted at equal value under legal tender law) quickly becomes dominated by the "bad" money. This is because people spending money will hand over the "bad" coins rather than the "good" ones, keeping the "good" ones for themselves.
So, people preffered to hoard nice looking coins, undamaged, as a mean of dealing with future needs and payments. This is a very old human behaviour, that invention of coins made it easier to apply. Humans felt and feel better if they have some reserve of cash safely deposited somewhere - and here is how vaults appeared.
As people needed cash now and not in the future, bankers appeared to fulfill this demand, but of course they asked for more money in return, so they can have a profit from their cash. In Medieval Europe, lending money with an interest was considered a sin, so generally only non-Christian people (such as Jewish people) were bankers. But same as we can see today, people soon turned mentally against those that lent them money, because it is much easier to spend than to save money and repay them. Then it emerges the irresistible idea that since someone has enough money to lend you some, while you are starving, it means that he can live without the money he lent to you, while for you is a matter of life and death. Even kings or high authorities lent money for their projects of developing towns, and roads, and fortresses, and for financing the wars that were supposed to bring more money and land with people to work that land and bring more money to their ruler.
In modern times circulating currency is no longer made of precious metals, but the issuer of this currency it is supposed to have securely stored the amount of precious metal (generally gold) equivalating the value of the circulating currency he issued. So every coin and every banknote has a back-up in precious metal, and even if we handle common metals or paper or polymers as currency, we know that there is something with intrinsic value backing-up the currency that only has face value.
How did coins help the civilization grow? Well, one can imagine how amazed was a man when he first saw that for a shiny piece of metal he got a big piece of meat, some baskets with grains, a load of fish or a brand new spearhead. Coins are of no use by themselves, but very useful by their buying power. If you are stuck in a desert with your pockets full of gold coins or big banknotes, you will die as rapidly as someone who has empty pockets. But in human history, people did both abject and sublime things using coins, or the power they gave to them. In human society coins are energy stored in a convenient form, and easy convertible to almost (yes, almost) anything that could fulfill human demands.
Though, let's not forget that, as someone said, the most valuable things in life are free.
